HELPFUL HINTS
Keep your Nifty help and menu files as small as possible. The smaller
they are, the faster Nifty can access them. Keeping the files small will force
you to be concise, and that will result in greater clarity.
Nifty has no problem browsing forward in a large file, but browsing back-
ward will be slower than in a small file. The reason is that, in order to save
RAM space, Nifty does not retain the file in memory; rather, it reads each file
one line at a time. Going forward is no problem, but when you go backward,
Nifty has to close the file, re-open it, and re-read all the lines that precede
the one to be displayed.
Remember that, when used as a Help system, Nifty is a memory-resident
program. All such programs need to "play tricks" on your computer to work
their magic. Occasionally, a memory-resident program may have memory access
conflicts with other programs, particularly other "pop-ups". The result may be
that your computer will "freeze" and will need to be reset. If you suspect
Nifty Help to be causing frequent computer "crashes", you may be able to solve
the problem by altering the order in which you load your programs (particularly
the pop-up variety) into memory. You may need to do a little experimenting
to see which of your other pop-ups are conflicting with Nifty. You may
ultimately have to decide which of your conflicting memory-resident programs
you need the least and then discard them.
FINALLY
Play around with the example help and menu files provided with the pro-
gram. After you've experimented for a while, you'll feel comfortable with the
Nifty Help and Menu systems. If you like what you see, please pass the program
around to your friends, upload it to bulletin boards (along with all its unal-
tered documentation and support files), tell your favorite computer magazine's
editor about it, and write your congressman!
Good luck.
